Looking For Some Green Reads?

There are countless books that cover fascinating environmental issues, many of which can be found in Dane County.

With the beginning of autumn has come the brisk afternoons perfect for cracking open some books. The Middleton Public Library has a huge list of “green” books, and the Madison Public Library offers book discussion kits including at least five copies of the book and discussion questions; just in case you haven’t read the books yet or missed the Go Big Read lecture, they have Michael Pollan’s In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto and The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals.  There will also be discussions of In Defense of Food at the Wisconsin Book Festival (Oct. 7-11, which includes presenters Wendell Berry and Will Allen).

When I was a budding environmental steward, the book 50 Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth truly inspired me to take simple actions in my daily life to help the environment. The new edition of this book has recently come out, and the website offers fun tips and kid-friendly articles for children. This readable book is enjoyable for adults and kids.

Happy reading,
Melissa
