New Companies That Are Making a Difference

With the holiday season creeping up on us, it may be time to start thinking of gifts to give to friends and family.  Why not give something that will benefit the environment and humankind simultaneously? The Better World Shopping Guide is a book and website that ranks companies on a code ethics and environmental-friendliness, and preaches shopping as a form of voting.

A new company I have fallen in love with is People Towels based out of Monterey, California that sells washcloth-sized, portable hand towels that you can use to dry your hands rather than using paper towels or an air dryer.  These towels are 100% organic cotton, stylish, and practical – what a concept!

A company established by two recent UW-Madison graduates is Powered Green, which allows people to purchase “energy seals” that offset the carbon dioxide produced over the lifetime of one’s laptop computer.  They do this by purchasing wind power from various Midwestern and southern wind farms.

Keep following us closer to the holiday season for more tips on eco-friendly gift ideas, decorations, and treats!
