Snow, Snow, Everywhere!

Despite the recent balmy mid-30 degree temperatures, the snow is likely to stop melting and hit us full force again. Although making snow angels is eco-friendly (that’s me in the bottom left looking cold), it probably won’t be effective in clearing off an entire driveway, or city streets. It’s important to realize how snow removal impacts the environment, so here are some helpful websites with more info.

  • [1thing] Milwaukee’s website had a spot on article about eco-friendly snow removal. Not only did they mention how shoveling snow yourself can burn 500 calories an hour, they advise purchasing electric snow blowers and using calcium magnesium acetate instead of road salt to prevent chemicals from getting into the water stream and poisoning ecosystems.
  • EcoTraction.com has a neat road salt replacement made from hydrothermal volcanic rock that is pet-, child-, and environment-friendly. What a great idea!

Keep on enjoying the wintertime,

Melissa
