Make Some Changes and High Five Yourself!

In two weeks I will be moving into a new apartment with a lovely friend, and we pledge this home to be As Eco-Friendly As Possible (AEFAP, for short).  Here are some of our goals:

  • Plant and use our own mint, chives, and basil
  • Use green/homemade cleaners
  • Use no paper towels or napkins! We are going to cut worn out clothes into many tiny squares we can use for cleaning and spills
  • Take the bus, walk, or bike as much as possible
  • Reuse and restore older furniture – the cushions on my dining room chairs used to be this nasty gold-yellow color, but they are currently being reupholstered with a new, clean, more 2010-ish color
  • Use only CFL or LED light bulbs
  • Make/purchase thick curtains for our windows in the winter, in addition to covering them in plastic
  • Purchase as much seasonal, local food as possible
  • Line-dry clothes
  • Use only Tupperware containers to store and transport food

These are a handful of the ideas we came up with. I am very much inspired by the folks who will begin our first ever Greener, Faster Challenge, which challenges locals to reduce their carbon footprint drastically (as compared to the average Madisonian). These are good-hearted people who want to do everything thing they can to better the world for future generations, and they know that every little change or action counts. So – try something new to help yourself, the environment, and the people around you, and don’t forget to give yourself a major high five!

Have fun,
