Thrilling Thrifts and Crazy Consignments!

Recently Sonya Newenhouse and myself went on our first home visit for the Greener Faster Challenge. While visiting Michelle Bright we were fortunate to find out some great information about thrift and  consignment stores in the Madison area.  Michelle was quite the expert and had some great items in her home and closet from these places.

It is safe to say that one of the favorite thrift stores in the Madison area is Saint Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores, or as it is lovably called, St. Vinnies.  From shoes and clothes, to artwork they have it all.  They have weekly coupons if you join their mailing list (this is all done online- so congrats to St. Vinnies for being paperless) and they have four locations in the Madison area, the newest one being on Willy Street.  The Odana Road location is the only one open on Sundays.

Then of course there is always the Goodwill, tried and true but it never fails.  They carry all things from clothing to kitchen items and even the occasional musical instrument.  Goodwill has four store locations in the Madison area and if you are a frequent shopper you can build up points and get coupons that way.  June 4th:  An Electric Emporium is mostly clothes with some very retro home and personal accessories.  It is a good mix of consignment and thrift in one store- though watch out as it is usually only open from 12-6pm. Boomerang Resale Shop on the north side can have some great finds for clothes but also for electronics, kids toys and furniture-also on the last Saturday of every month all furniture is 25% off!  Savers can also have great finds if you can’t find what you are looking for elsewhere and you can get a super saver pass and save 30% on your purchases.  HospiceCare Thrift Stores offers great clothes, jewelry, housewares and books for women and you can get on their email list and get updated on promotions.  HospiceCare and Savers each have two locations in Madison-one on the east side and one on the west side.  Then there is also Dig & Save, which is part of the society of St. Vinnies.  I have never ventured into Dig & Save but from what I hear from co-workers and friends alike it is one of a kind.  You have to be prepared to hunt and get a little dirty, but the deals you can find can be remarkable.

In terms of consignment stores Rethreads, Pink Poodle, Lady Moxie and Betty Bling are all great for higher end consignment.  They can be prefect for those retro finds or discount designer items and they usually will give you a good deal for selling clothes if you have some nicer items. Betty Bling offers coupons for new shoppers.

For kids options there is Silly Monkey Funky Resale, Half Pint Resale, and Kid-E- Corner just to name a few.

So if you are in the mood to do some shopping think sustainable and buy resale instead of new.  Check out any number of these shops first and see what you find! What is your favorite? My readers and I would love to know!
