World Car Free Day

Last Wednesday EnAct, Community Car and Madison Environmental Group celebrated World Car Free Day for the seventh year in a row.  World Car Free Day, celebrated on September 22nd, is an international holiday that encourages car independence and stopping automobile based city planning.  This year EnAct and Community Car held a walk around the capitol with Mayor Dave and a meet and greet with alternative transportation prizes, including a grand prize of a free bike from Williamson Bikes!

The rain held out for us on this usually rainy day as we all took a stroll around the capitol- some on bikes, some on foot but no one in a car.  At the meet and greet in front of The Old Fashioned Mayor Dave made a speech about what he learned in Amsterdam earlier this year regarding alternative transportation and about the incentives taken in Madison – where he pointed out one of the 14 new hybrid buses in use right now in Madison. Council member Steve Arnold from the City of Fitchburg told us all about their Commuter Challenge win against Sun Prairie in which the two cities offset over 5 tons of C02.  Great prizes were won by all to help everyone keep on alternative commuting- by bus, bike or community car. Paddy Rourke won the grand prize Voyageur GS bike and is giving the bike to her niece for her to ride to school.  Snacks donated by Willy Street Co-op and root beer donated by The Old Fashioned were enjoyed and good times were had by all.  Most importantly though we all took a second to step back and think about the way we live and how our decisions make an impact and most of all how together we are much stronger than apart.
