February 29, 2012: Day of New Opportunities

As February is coming to close, there is one more thing left to reflect upon before moving on into March. The leap day is almost here! Most leap days are only recognized or remembered by those who anxiously await their birthday. The leap day has practical and sentimental value in our societies and many that have predated us.

Julius Caesar in 45 B.C. reorganized the calendar to maintain the time of year that festivals and celebrations occurred. Prior to his genius idea of adding 1 day every four years, an entire month was added every 2 years. Julius Caesar wanted to eliminate the confusion.

This change to the calendar inspired new traditions that followed. In centuries past it was understood that on leap days women had the opportunity to propose to a man they wished to be wed to. It was only this day that women were given this unique chance to ask a man for their hand in marriage. Each country developed their own traditions of what a man was to present to the women if he were to deny her request. In Britain it was custom to present the woman with a kiss and a silk gown for denying her request for marriage. In Denmark men gave women 12 pairs of gloves as compensation and in Finland men purchased fabric for the woman so she could make a skirt from it.

In lieu of this almost forgotten tradition, this Leap Day I encourage all of you to take the time and do something nice for the one you love. Tell your spouse how you feel about them, or just spend time together. Take a leap of faith (no pun intended) and tell others in your life how special they are to you. Tell your mother or father how you appreciate them or love the advice they give, tell your siblings how much you love laughing and spending time with them, even tell your roommates and neighbors how you enjoy their company. Take this Leap Day as one extra day this year that you have to spend with people you love, that support you, and make you smile.

Gosh, I just missed the leap day this year to propose to the man Im in love with! I really never heard about it before and that women were given such day for doing that:) And it is even more funny to know that the men were obliged to give the women they denied something in compensation for that. But at least I show all the time to the people I love how much I care about them and you are right, that this day is just one extra to spend with our most dear ones! great post and info 🙂
