Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks

It’s that time of year again! It is time to start thinking about what to do with things in your home that you want to get rid of. All your old furniture, electronics, and even toxic materials can be recycled, safely disposed of, or reused by others. Just because you don’t want it or the kids have grown out it, doesn’t mean someone can’t turn your trash into treasure. Here is a list of different places around Madison that offer different recycling and reusing services that might be handy this spring season.

This City of Madison has an amazing website that thoroughly informs residents about where and what and be recycled. There are three different yard waste drop offs sites around the city as well as links to where you can get rain barrels and compost bins. The City of Madison has recently partnered with Uniek to host a monthly collection of clean #6 Styrofoam at their manufacturing facility at 805 Uniek Dr. Waunakee, WI. The collection takes place on the 3rd Saturday of every month from 10am – 2pm and they accept clean #6 Styrofoam. The collection is free and open to anyone, including businesses. Another great feature of The City of Madison website is that Cleansweep which is a place to drop off hazardous household waste materials like paints, pesticides, and poisons.

This Waste Management program is an amazing way to get rid of batteries, electronics, and light bulbs without leaving the comfort of your home. You can send your recyclables in, get a confirmation receipt, and go on enjoying your day. This is a great program for busy parents and working adults. Check out their website and take a look at the all the items that can be sent in for recycling as well as even take advantage of the recycling kits that can transform your household.

For all you bargain shoppers and avid donators check out Freecycle’s local listings of a variety of items from all rooms in the house. Kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom pieces are all wanted and posted on this site. Sign up to keep your identity and personal information safe from random Internet surfers and only available to those interested buyers. You can post and respond to posting for items that you are following. This is also great for people who are moving outside the Madison area. You can search any city and find or post listings no matter where you are going or coming from.

These are just a few places around Madison that can satisfy your donation or shopping needs. Also check out HabitatRestore, Goodwill, and St. Vincent de Paul for other building and clothing donation opportunities. It that time of year to get out of the house and get outside to enjoy the weather and the ones you love. I hope these places help you finish your household chores and give you more time to get outside!

Sincerely,

EnAct Intern Kelsey
